My prayers and sympathy go out to all of Carstens family. I knew him as a childhood friend and he was alway fun and caring. We connected again a while ago on Facebook and I enjoyed corresponding with him. I always enjoyed reading his comments on my posts. He will be greatly missed.

Carsten Maffei was my mentor when I started teaching. Pat and Elizabeth, he loved you both so much. He was a Master Teacher and taught me the essence of being a great teacher, mentor and a better person. His ease with humor and how it transcends to the classroom is a wonderful gift that I use everyday in my classes. Thanks for all the laughs and all the great memories. Carsten was a dedicated husband, father and teacher (a "molder of minds" in his own words). His humor and lack of pretentiousness were always evident. He had a nickname for many of his friends who cherished their sobriquet. Cathy I will miss Carsten greatly, and we convey our sympathies and best wishes to Patricia, Elizabeth and their and his families.

I worked with him at A. Phillips Randolph High School 20 years ago. He guided my steps as a young teacher. He was kind, funny, sweet and understanding. He always joked about the"adult beverage" and the"2:30 pm cigar"... We've kept in touch and I have always looked forward to his posts on Facebook...life will never be the same again.
